SilkPeel®
DermalinfusionTM System - Patient Information
What is the SilkPeel® DermalinfusionTM
System? The SilkPeel® System is a safe and
highly effective dual treatment for the skin. It can be thought of as an
advanced form of microdermabrasion. It combines general exfoliation using
suction along with instilling topical treatments that target specific
dermatologic conditions.
SilkPeel®
uses a diamond head treatment tip to precisely and safely remove dead skin
cells while infusing patient-specific treatment solution. Exfoliation (removing the outer layer of dry,
dead skin) promotes the reduction of fine line wrinkles, minor scars, acne,
stretch marks and sun damage. It also
encourages regeneration of the outer layer of the skin, resulting in increased
elasticity and a more youthful-looking, pliable, smooth skin surface. The gentle “sanding and suction” will help
eliminate blocked pores and breakouts.
By removing dead, useless cells, your skin care products will work
quicker and be more effective, since there is less blocking them from providing
their benefits to deeper living cells.
The
SilkPeel® treatment applies topical formulas that penetrate the skin
to further enhance the exfoliation process.
Specific formulas are used to treat various conditions such as acne,
hyperpigmentation (dark discolorations), sun damage, dehydration/dry skin, and
fine line wrinkles.
SilkPeel®
can be combined with some of our other procedures such as Intense Pulsed Light
(IPL) or ActiveFx laser resurfacing for an even better outcome.
What should I do before the procedure? We offer a
free consultation with the aesthetic nurse prior to starting the SilkPeel
treatment. She will evaluate your skin, answer
any questions, and advise you as to what options she would recommend for
you.
If
you are using Accutane for the treatment of acne, it is important that you
discontinue its use at least six months prior to your first SilkPeel®
treatment. The use of Retin-A should
also be stopped at least two weeks prior to a SilkPeel® treatment,
and it should not be used for three days after any SilkPeel® treatment. You are advised to avoid any dermal filler
injections for up to 10-14 days before any exfoliation treatment. You are advised to avoid Botox injections for
at least 24 hours before any exfoliation treatment.
If
you are prone to getting cold sores (herpes) around the mouth or facial area,
please let us know in advance, since you may need a prescription for Zovirax
prior to having a treatment with SilkPeel®. You should also avoid having any SilkPeel®
treatment during a cold sore outbreak.
Please alert the aesthetic nurse if you
are pregnant or breast-feeding, have been diagnosed with rosacea, or have an
allergy or sensitivity to aspirin.
What should I expect during the
SilkPeel® treatment? You will be asked to remove your contact
lenses, if you are wearing them. The
exfoliation process will be like any superficial dermabrasion treatment. You may experience a scratchy, stinging
sensation both during the exfoliation process and with the application of the
topical formula. This will subside after
the treatment is completed. There could
be a temporary tightness, redness, or slight swelling of the skin, which will
disappear within a few hours after treatment, depending on your skin’s
sensitivity. You will be in and out in
less than an hour. Most will leave the
office with just a subtle hint of a healthy glow.
What happens after SilkPeel®? If we are
treating your acne or if you have facial telangiectasias (small, visible blood
vessels), your condition may appear to worsen immediately after the
treatment. While acne will improve after
additional treatments, the appearance of the telangiectasias will diminish
after the skin rebuilds itself.
Sunscreens
should be used whenever you are outdoors.
After SilkPeel® treatments, you will be more susceptible to
sunburn and hyperpigmentation. Vigorous
exercise should be limited for 24 hours after a SilkPeel®
treatment. You are advised to inform the
office immediately of any complications or concerns that may arise.
With
one treatment, your skin will be cleaner, healthier, and feel smoother. Multiple treatments are recommended for more
significant, longer-lasting results. If
you wish to purchase a series, we have several packages to choose from. SilkPeel® is just one part of
achieving healthier skin. Our aesthetic
nurse will discuss other options available to help you look your best.
